Saginaw Valley State University plans to expand its student housing capacity through a property purchase approved by the university’s Board of Control on Monday, Oct. 26.
The board authorized spending up to $32 million to acquire the eastern portion of Campus Village Apartments and other nearby properties in Kochville Township, Michigan, near Pierce and Davis roads. The university plans to rename the apartment section Cardinal Corners and bring its 357 student housing spaces into the university’s residential system.
Purchase responds to demand
J.J. Boehm, Saginaw Valley State’s vice president for communications, said the university has not had enough space for all students seeking campus housing during the past several recruitment cycles.
“For the last couple of recruitment cycles, we’ve actually not had enough space to accommodate all of the students who want to live on campus.” — J.J. Boehm, vice president for communications at Saginaw Valley State University
The apartments consist of single-bedroom, townhouse-style units. Boehm said adding the property will allow the university to increase the number of students it can house and respond to the demand seen during recent recruitment cycles.
- 357 housing spaces are included in the eastern portion of Campus Village Apartments.
- The purchase is authorized for up to $32 million.
- The western portion of Campus Village will remain privately owned.
Existing leases will continue
Students who already live in the property will be able to complete their current leases as the ownership transition proceeds. Boehm said the university will honor those agreements for the length of each lease.
After the transaction closes, the acquired portion of the complex will fall under the jurisdiction of Saginaw Valley State University Police. The university also plans to add security cameras and other measures as the property becomes part of its housing system.
“Being able to have it under the jurisdiction of university police, being able to add our security cameras, that should provide an additional layer of safety and security.” — J.J. Boehm, vice president for communications at Saginaw Valley State University
Another apartment project is underway
The university is also building Pine Grove apartments, a separate project expected to provide housing for another 120 students. The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 20.
The western section of Campus Village will continue under private ownership, while Cardinal Corners and Pine Grove will add university-affiliated options near campus. Together, the projects address the university’s stated need for additional student housing as more students seek to live on or near campus.
