Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition arrives for Nintendo Switch 2 on Nov. 5, bringing Eidos-Montreal’s 2021 single-player adventure to Nintendo’s newer console. Nintendo Everything’s review examines the game’s story and cast while placing the release in the broader history of Marvel’s spacefaring team.
The game is a new version of the 2021 title rather than a new chapter in the film series. Nintendo Everything notes that the original game earned a positive response from critics and fans but fell short of the sales figures Square had expected. Five years later, the Encore Edition gives Switch 2 players access to that same adventure on the platform.
A team built around its personalities
The story follows a newly assembled Guardians lineup led by Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord. He is joined by Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora and Groot. Their designs are distinct to the game, but Nintendo Everything says their personalities remain broadly familiar to audiences who know the film versions of the characters.
- Peter Quill leads the group as Star-Lord.
- Drax, Rocket, Gamora and Groot make up the rest of the team.
- The game uses original character designs while retaining recognizable personalities.
The review traces the team’s opening mission to a restricted-access planet, where Quill discovers a mysterious gem. The object releases a shadowy antagonist into space, and the Guardians flee as the planet begins to decay. Their escape ends with the Nova Corps, a space-police force, taking the group into custody.
That arrest sets up several of the game’s story threads. While being detained, Quill encounters a former romantic partner and her daughter. The team also crosses paths with an unusual cult member who is being brought to justice. After the Guardians are released, they face a large fine and begin looking for the money needed to pay it. Their efforts lead to the discovery that the cult members taken into custody have been brainwashed.
A release shaped by Marvel’s wider rise
Nintendo Everything places the game’s arrival in the context of the Guardians’ transformation from a relatively obscure comic-book team into a major part of popular culture. Before the 2014 film adaptation, the group had appeared only occasionally outside the comics, including in limited cartoon and video game appearances. The film’s success was followed by a trilogy, an animated series, additional comic-book runs and several games.
For Switch 2 owners, the Encore Edition therefore revisits a game connected to that larger franchise history while keeping the focus on the Guardians’ relationships and mission. Nintendo Everything lists Eidos-Montreal as both developer and publisher. The game will be available for Nintendo Switch 2 beginning Thursday.
