New York students can apply to State University of New York campuses without paying the usual application fee through midnight on Nov. 2, 2026, the university system announced Monday.
What the waiver covers
The temporary free-application period lets prospective students submit applications to as many as five SUNY campuses at no charge. Each application normally carries a $50 fee, meaning families can save as much as $250 if a student applies to five schools. SUNY encouraged applicants to also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as part of the process.
“Rather than spending $50 on each application, they save $250, and they check that task off their list,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr.
King said the waiver is intended to simplify the application process for students who may face extra barriers, including first-generation applicants, low-income students and those from high-needs rural communities.
Why SUNY is offering the free period
Officials described the effort as part of an ongoing push to make college entry less burdensome. King noted that both applications and enrollment have grown each year since the initiative began five years ago, and he framed the fee waiver as one step to reduce friction in applying.
- Dates: Free application period runs through midnight Nov. 2, 2026.
- Limit: Applies to up to five SUNY campus applications per student.
- Cost savings: $50 per application, up to $250 per applicant.
- Financial aid: Students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA to determine aid eligibility.
Students and families may start or submit applications at www.suny.edu/applysuny/, the system said.
The announcement comes as public and private colleges nationwide experiment with fee waivers and application-period incentives to boost application numbers and diversity among applicants. SUNY officials described the current free-application window as a straightforward measure to reduce upfront costs and administrative friction for prospective students.
The university system did not announce changes to application deadlines for individual campuses; applicants should check each campus's admissions calendar and requirements while completing the SUNY application.
