Skylar Diggins, one of the most decorated players in Notre Dame women’s basketball history, is rejoining the program in a new staff role, the university announced Oct. 26, 2026. Diggins will serve as a special advisor to head coach Niele Ivey, working as an outside consultant, assisting the coaching staff and mentoring student‑athletes off the court.
role and timing
The school said Diggins is expected to be on the bench for most games and that her appointment runs through the start of the 2027 Unrivaled season. Notre Dame described the position as both a strategic and developmental role, providing coaching staff support and player mentorship.
“This is truly a legendary addition. In this new role, Skylar will help elevate our program through her leadership, expertise and unique perspective as both a former student‑athlete and accomplished professional,” said Niele Ivey, Notre Dame’s head coach.
Ivey, entering her seventh season as head coach, framed Diggins’ return as a boost to the program’s culture and player development. Ivey led the Irish to an ACC Tournament championship in 2024 and an Elite Eight appearance last season.
Diggins’ background
Diggins starred at Notre Dame from 2009‑13. At the time she left for the WNBA in 2013 she was the program’s career leader in points and steals and had set or shared multiple school records. During her college career she helped the Fighting Irish capture a Big East Tournament title, reach three Final Fours and play in two national championship games.
