Utica College women’s hockey received their first win of the season in an exhibition match up Sunday, October 23, against the Toronto Aeros.

UC began with two goals from sophomore Kaitlin Parent and senior Tori Pelton. Toronto netted a goal in the second period. UC senior, Gabrielle Schnepp, responded with a goal after a passing play within the Toronto zone.

UC was able to score three more goals within the third period. The end score was 6-2.

The women’s team begins their official season on Nov. 1 at Lebanon Valley in PA.

The 2015-2016 season was one of the best seasons, according to goalie Keira Goin. Goin has played goalie for UC for the past four seasons.

“I’m hoping we do well, better than last year, and can hopefully make the programs first NCAA tournament appearance,” said Goin.

Goin states that the teams biggest challenge will be, “Showing up and doing well in all 25 off our games. We need to beat the teams we can beat and upset the teams we’re not expected to beat.”

The team finished the season with a record of 19-8- 1 overall. UC surpassed shots by period in comparison to opponents with 906-780. Overall UC shot percentage .092 compared to opponent .063.

Goin finished the season with 620 saves, a .942 percent.

“It was one of the best seasons we’ve had in my time here, both on and off the ice.” Goin continued, “I’m excited for the season because I think we can pick up where we left off last year.”

The women’s team will be returning to their home rink Nov. 13 to face William Smith College. UC plays four away games from Nov. 1 to Nov. 11.
