My name is Crystal Hayner, and I am a senior majoring in communications with a concentration in theatre. I am originally from South Otselic, N.Y., and I chose Utica College because I loved how small it was. I am from a very small school district and graduated with 26 others in my high school. The classes being fairly small made it easier to transition. Overall, I also like the one-on-one help I receive from my professors.
While at UC, I played on the women’s basketball team during my freshman year and have been manager for the past two years. I am also involved in the Utica College theater club, and I have been a part of Honors Society.
I would either like to go to graduate school for directing or join a touring company for a broadway show as a stagehand to gain as much experience as I can. If I do choose to get my masters, I would love to come back to Utica College and teach theater.
I became part of theater when I stopped playing basketball and was hired for the manager position. This lead me to audition for the fall play, “Get Smart,” during my sophomore year; I got the part for Princess Ingrid, and I loved every moment of it. I was the assistant stage manager and assistant lighting designer for “Jekyll and Hyde.” Last semester, I was the stage manager for “All in the Timing” and this year I’ll be playing the role of Mack in “Cabaret.”
When I am not doing shows for the school’s theater club, I like to go to shows at the Stanley Theatre. I also enjoy road trips, hanging out with friends and writing and drawing when I can.
When I graduate from UC I hope to go back to Long Lakes Camp for the Arts, which is a summer theater camp for kids, and work there for the summer. Then, during the fall, I hope to start graduate school.
