The Pioneer softball team took on Nazareth College at home Sunday in a double header losing both games 3-7 and 0-4.
In the first game, Nazareth got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with three runs. The team added another in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers fought to comeback in the seventh when senior Kassidy Ogren hit a three-run home run, but the team would fall short 7-3. Utica was held to four hits in the game and junior Brittany Meka was the losing pitcher. Nazareth senior Nicole White got the win and freshman Kristen Simmons had three hits and three RBI’s in five AB’s.
The second game was a struggle offensively for Utica. The team ended with only five hits and could not score a run. Nazareth started off strong with three runs in the first inning and that was all the team would need. Sophomore Marissa Tortora had two hits and two RBI’s for Nazareth while Senior Rachel Mertens pitched all seven innings and got the win. Utica sophomore Shannon Cool suffered the loss.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Tuesday when they play two games against Hamilton College at home starting at 4:30 p.m.
