The Utica College women’s hockey team made the trip up north to take on Plattsburgh State University for the first of a two-game series.  The team was in high hopes to come out and potentially take some very important games from the Cardinals.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early four-goal lead.  The Pioneers struck back at the end of the first quarter with a goal of their own from senior Emily Coope.  Going into the first intermission the team had their work cut out for them.

The stellar defense really needed to come out after the showing in the first period.  The Pioneers are known to have some solid defense, noted by the Plattsburgh announcer.  The teams defense came through and gave up no goals for all the second.

Solid defense by junior goalie Amanda Lupo and the Pioneers helped stop the bleeding.  The Pioneers struggled to get shots on net, often not getting good chances in the offensive zone.  A mid-third period goal by senior Jane Pagano brought the score to 4-2, the Cardinals would tack on another goal minutes later to make the score 5-2.

The Pioneers look to come back with vengeance tomorrow as they get a second chance to take on the Cardinals.  With today’s 6-2 loss, the team drops to 9-6 and snaps their two-game win streak.

On the bright side the teams defense showed some strong will power after the issues in the first period.  Coming back and only letting up two goals from the second period on is a true testament to the strength of the Pioneers defense.

Utica is back in action tomorrow vs Plattsburgh.  Stay tuned for tomorrow’s game recap.
